Book Indexing Services

At Lex Academic, we relish the exacting task of compiling the index of your scholarly monograph, edited volume, or non-fiction trade book. We work to very tight deadlines to accommodate the narrow window between receiving page proofs and your publisher's deadline.

Fast and Thorough Academic Book Indexing

We are the UK’s leading academic book indexing company. Our academic indexing service is peerless in its quality and remarkable with regard to turnaround time. Our brilliant academic indexers can work to the most exacting briefs and deadlines, including indexing in a range of modern and classical languages, at pre-proof or proof stage. We have indexed for all of the major academic publishers in the humanities, law, social sciences, and STEM, comfortably overdelivering within very narrow time windows. Our indexing clients return time and again thanks to the superlative quality, speed, and rigour of our service. We have produced academic indexes for the world’s most pre-eminent academics, excelling under pressure to ensure publication deadlines are always met with time to spare. Our indexes start from £12 per 1,000 indexable words.

It is always best to schedule your index as soon as possible in advance to avoid disappointment. We can field last-minute requests, but our indexers are in high demand, so it is worth securing availability early. Many authors book our services when they submit their manuscript, which is typically about three months before they will need the completed index.

How We Work

Your Lex Academic indexer will pore through your manuscript, collating all key words (and, where relevant, names and sources), creating an informative—and user-friendly—inventory of terms. Being a PhD-educated subject expert in their own right, your specially-selected index editor will already be cognizant of terms that cannot be left out of your index. Your index editor can perform the task of indexing at pre-proof or proof stage, the latter of which will involve pagination. We are happy to liaise directly with your publisher at any point. To date, we have created indexes for publishers including Bloomsbury, Brill, Berghahn Books, De Gruyter, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, MIT Press, Harvard University Press, Routledge, Springer, Peeters, Peter Lang, Palgrave Macmillan, and Wiley-Blackwell.

We can create embedded indexes using XML tags, or back-of-the-book indexes using PDF proofs.

For clients who want an insight into our indexing process, we have created a handy and concise blog article (which may also encourage you to do your own indexing!): https://www.lexacademic.com/blog/diy-indexing-for-academic-authors/

We have uniquely strong expertise creating indexes in Anthropology, Classics, and Philosophy. We can index in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, and Spanish.

Indexes can be short and sweet or utterly exhaustive. We can provide all-inclusive indexes, as well as individual indexes of topics and names (as requested), and specialised inventories of technical or foreign terms (including Latin and Greek for Classicists). We can create dedicated indexes for personal names (index nominum), places (index locorum), words (index verborum), and sources (index/apparatus fontium).

“Claire Minton in Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle pronounces that indexing is ‘a thing that only the most amateurish author undertook to do for his own book.’ After reviewing the wonderful work that Lex Academic did with a book I was co-editing on mother absence in the ancient world for Peeters, I found myself completely in agreement with this sentiment. Lex Academic communicated clearly and promptly, set appropriate expectations and reasonable deadlines, and delivered the work on time. They constructed for us two expert indexes: an index locorum and a subject index. Nor was this an easy book to index, given the range of sources and topics covered, from classical Greek art to late antique biblical and Jewish exegesis (and much in between!). Lex Academic’s fees reflect the level of their professionalism and the quality of their product.” — Professor David M. Ratzan, New York University

Customer Reviews

Prof. Ben Laurence (University of Chicago)

I contacted Lex Academic only 3 weeks before the page proofs and index for my book were due. They turned them around extraordinarily quickly and did a top-notch job too. I had to change almost nothing, their work was so good. I will be recommending Lex Academic to my colleagues!

Dr Mariachiara Angelucci (Humboldt Research Fellow)

I had the opportunity to try Lex Academic's service for a second time for the indexes of one of my monographs. Like the first time, Louise Chapman was very helpful. The work was done accurately and in a very short time and was a great help in speeding up the publication time. I would definitely recommend Lex academic to scholars and I am sure I will always use this service for my future publications.

Professor Brendan H. O’Connor, Associate Professor in the School of Transborder Studies, Arizona State University

Wonderful academic indexers - professional, responsive, easy to work with, and they produced an outstanding index that meet all my needs. Quick turnaround and ability to work with US institutions was a plus. Highly recommended!

Professor Silvio Carta, Associate Professor and Head of Art & Design, University of Hertfordshire

Uroš Kovač (European Research Council Advanced Grant, GLOBALSPORT)

Louise Chapman assembled an index for my monograph. The work was excellent: I had to make very few changes to it before submitting to the publisher. The index was assembled with care: Loiuse clearly knows what makes a good academic index. The deadline was fairly tight, but Louise delivered, even a few days earlier. I'm very happy to recommend Lex Academic to colleagues, as well as to return to it for my own work. Thank you Louise!

Dr. Johannes Lenhard (University of Cambridge)

I was very happy with the services: highly professional, delivered earlier than promised and with more features included than expected. Fantastic service!

“Lex Academic’s copyediting and indexing is brilliant. They took so much time with my manuscript—bonding with the subject matter and creating both flow and meaning. I have been so lucky to find them. I would choose Lex Academic for all my projects. They are champions!”

Dr. Barbara Hales (German Studies, University of Houston - Clear Lake)
