FAQs

Lex Academic help academics and PhD students to place their work with leading journals and prestigious publishing houses.

Does Lex Academic provide a confidential service?

Yes. Your work is anonymised before being edited, so nobody will know you have used Lex Academic. If you are happy to leave us a review with your name, then that is absolutely your call; many authors are glad to leave just their initials and institutional affiliation. Otherwise, these details can remain entirely anonymous. You do not need to formally acknowledge Lex Academic in any of your publications: we are proudly your editorial secret weapon.

If you require extra assurance, then we can issue a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). This is a legally binding contract establishing a confidential relationship between yourself and Lex Academic.

Will I retain copyright over my work?

Yes. Before we begin working together, we will issue a contract establishing that you hold the copyright to the edited/translated manuscript.

How expensive is Lex Academic?

We are realistically priced for the quality of our service. At Lex Academic, we believe in providing a unique and exceptional service befitting the unique requirements of your manuscript. This begins with, and is informed by, a discussion about your work and publication ambitions. We strive to provide extraordinary value for money.

How do I pay?

Before editing begins, we will send you an invoice for the entire fee (inclusive of VAT @ 20%, if applicable). Invoices can be settled through AliPay, credit card, debit card, bank transfer, PayPal, or Wise. In exceptional cases, we accept cheques.

Is it OK if my university pays for the proofreading?

Many of our clients are on European Research Council projects, which generously fund the copy-editing and translation of research outputs.

For PhD students: it is not uncommon for university departments to have funding allocated so that postgraduate students can get their theses professionally proofread. Some universities also have funds in their disability offices to offset the costs of proofreading for students who need dedicated editorial support. Many of our clients have had their PhD editing paid for by their home institution. You will want to enquire with the relevant administrator in your department, faculty and/or disability office.

How quickly can you turn my document around?

We are an author services firm with a difference. As such, we do not like to promise lightning-fast turnaround times, for these services imply (more often than not) a poorer, rushed editing job. We can, of course, accommodate tighter deadlines. Let us know your time constraints or deadline in your project enquiry.

Lex Academic copyedited my new book for Oxford University Press. I was extremely impressed with the entire editorial process, which significantly shortened the time I would have needed to submit the manuscript to the publisher. The editing was excellent and delivered in a timely manner. The editor was careful and meticulous, suggesting very well-judged, editorial interventions. Lex Academic offers an outstanding service and I do not hesitate to recommend it to all researchers in need of rigorous, academic, editorial support for their publications.
